Local Species.

A wide and varied catch is available in the Hokianga sea area.

Most common species are:-

Snapper, gurnard, kahawai, mullet, trevally, terakihi, blue cod, hapuku, bass, bluenose, flounder, striped marlin, black marlin, blue marlin, broadbill, bonito, skipjack tuna, yellow fin tuna and king fish. Crayfish is plentiful.

Big game fish abound during the summer months and can appear off our shores at any time. Striped marlin have been caught right at the bar entrance, within 30 minutes of the Omapere boat ramp.

Early this season, John Kuljish landed the first broadbill to be weighed at the Hokianga - a great achievement. He was fishing off Winnits, skippered by Dylan Chamberlain. The fish weighed in at 127.8kg.

Since John landed this fish, there have been a further 5 boated plus 2 tagged and released.

Young Jack McIntyre landed a beautiful 143.6kg Striped Marlin in March this season - another great achievement. He had not caught a marlin until this season and now has 3 to his credit; all out of the Hokianga - not too bad for an 11yr old junior member.
